At present, online poker rooms are in all probability the safest place to play. Well I am sure we have all been told ‘not to trust a stranger’, however playing online restriction the number of shifty people who you would potentially meet at an land based casino. Also there is no illegal card handling, as the dealer is a program, and programs don’t cheat.

Some people however, do worry about hackers. It’s been many years since the last major occurrence of hacking. To prevent the problem we have seen breakthroughs such as the SSLv3/TLSv1 encryption algorithm and multi-layered random number sequencers. In addition to all these technical advances, we also have the ones that you would expect to have in a land based casino.

Common forms of online cheating is player collusion. This is when two or more players divulge to each other what their cards hold. This cheating technique is more difficult to pull off during a live game, unlike online games where you could have a fellow player on the phone, or sitting right next to them by the computer.

Luckily most players are unable to use that to their advantage. The two players (cheaters) would have to coordinate well together, which warrants a lot of practice. Don’t worry, online poker rooms take this into consideration and watch for telltale signs of collusion, also checking whether two players always play at the same table together. If they were to use this method of cheating, they would have to use ‘hit and run’ tactics. Colluding players would need to hit up a high-limit table, then take off to another online poker room with their winnings and never go back.

It really is not worth trying, but just in case, here are some pointers on how to spot potential colluding players.....

1. A group of players who attempt to "steamroll" other players out of the game. This means re-raising each other to make non-colluding players call multiple bets at once.

2. Players who in no way play fast, pre-flop. That's the moment to talk about what they hold. Watch whoever is under the gun and be aware of response time.

3. A team of players who hike up bets by re-raising with someone in between them. This gets the highest amount of bets from the third party. The alarm ought to go off if one of those re-raising players has a crap hand, or if one of them folds with one bet to go in spite of a substantial pot. There's a time to bluff and a time to fold and the majority people have an idea when that is, so be on the lookout for players who implement terrible judgement like that. Classify that person as a prospective goldmine for yourself or a possible cheater.

That all said and done, it is quite rare that someone would attempt these sorts of tactics. Still, remember to never indict anyone of cheating. If you do suspect someone, contact the poker room’s administrator or simply stop playing at that table.

Land Based Cheats

The Mechanic's Grip: Most cheating occurs through the precision of sleight of hand in manipulating cards in the deck. There is a special manner of holding the deck to execute these cheating manoeuvres. One method of holding the deck is known as ‘The Mechanic's Grip’.

To understand this grip, pick up a deck of cards as though you were preparing to deal. It is likely that you are currently holding the deck in the palm of your hand with all four fingers on the long side of the deck, and your thumb on the top of the deck. When you deal, you use your thumb to push a single card onto the tips of your four fingers. The thumb holds the card in this place until the thumb and index finger of the other hand grabs it and deals it across the table.

If you have been playing cards for much of your life, then it probable that you had never noticed that this is how you deal. With time, it becomes an acquired natural motor skill that requires no conscious thought.

Now whilst holding the deck in this manner, move your index finger and middle finger from the long side of the deck to the short side of the deck away from yourself. In a very broad sense, this is the Mechanic's Grip. It is through this grip that such cheating as peeking, second dealing, and bottom dealing are facilitated. Note that your hand is now concealing more of the deck.

An additional Mechanic's Grip is to hold the deck with the thumb on top of the deck, the index finger holding around the front edge, the two middle fingers beneath the deck, and the little finger around the rear edge. This style also ensures that a large amount of the deck is being sheltered by the dealer's hand.

There are two things to reflect on, however. One, that such cheat tricks can be performed in a way other than with the Mechanic's Grip, and two, that an truthful player may use what looks like the Mechanic's Grip as a typical way to deal. More information is consequently required on specific cheating techniques.
